Default How big is Tyria really?

If you think about it, a runner can get across the entire continent (Ascalon to HoD) in about 2 hours. If an average human walks at a speed of 1.3 meters per second, then tyria that we can go on is only 9360 meters across? That's like 6 miles, a walk to downtown...

What if you assume that GW toons are superhuman freaks who can run at a constant sprint? Also don't forget the speed boosts. I think it'll be a more realistic estimate then. Anyone care to do the math?

If there were a walk command or we could move all the way across Tyria with deep freeze (and healing breeze) continuously being casted on us, we would be able to calculate the distance across, but...

Ya theres no way to calculate the distance unless you did it for running. The GW Characters defiently do not walk. Also the runners use either Sprint, Charge, Dodge, Storm Chaser, ect... That cuts down the time as well. You cant calculate the distance unless one maintains a specific speed from one side to the other. Also you would have to start from Fort Ranik as it is the furthest point opposite of HoD.

But I'm saying, that even if our characters could walk, which would give us the lowest miles per hour, then at most its would take like 3-4 hours, still showing that Tyria is the size of a city.

It's a bit pointless discussing realism in a game where an almost naked individual can survive being hit in the head by a fellblade. While dancing.

Smaller map doesn't necessarily mean smaller game experience (hopefully) they may have just added a lot more towns/quests etc.

You are my hero for the day

The average human covers 2 to 3 feet per step (2.5 average for the sake of the estimate). Therefore there would be 2,112 steps per mile... and if each step takes 1 second that's 2,112 seconds... 35 minutes and 12 seconds.
If the average speed boost gives you 25% faster running speed and they get spammed... someone else continue the calculation.

Read the name of the forum its been put in ¬_¬

Otherwise, I'm sure theres more to the math than factors mentioned above

There was a discussion on this quite some time ago on GWO. I came up with a theory then, and here goes:

Tyria is huge, just like real-life continents, its just that everythign that lives on it (humans, devourers, hydra, dwarves, mursaat, etc.) are all incredibly massive. This would certainly explain why every mountain seems to tiny.

Eh-hem...now, to my more practical views.

The only way to get an exact (or at least reasonably accurate, based on facts) is to find an object, location, or other such game feature, the length of which is already known. Time how long it takes to run this known distance. Run across Tyria, being sure to time yourself, and pausing the timer at portal loads. Then, just put your known length over the time it took to run it (ex. 100/2 [metres/minutes]) and cross-multiply that by a variable over the time it took the run across Tyria (ex. x/80 [variable length/minutes]).

Ex. Solved.

100/2 = x/80 (<-- corss multiply the fractions)

2x = 8000

2x/2 = 8000/2

x = 4000

Therefore, Tyria is 4000 metres long, in this example.

So, someone needs to go find a measurement in Tyria, and then we can put my math skills to the test!

4km is a pretty short distance. For such a big map I would have thought it'd be longer.

Noo, 4km is just the example of the math to figure out the distance. All those numbers are made up.
